Their plight is
met with near-complete silence and inaction by Western Christians.
We wrote about the rising persecution of Christians across the world two weeks ago. A bigger human tragedy is emerging in the Middle East in general and Syria in particular. It’s nothing but annihilation of Christians who have been living there for 2000 years.
The Syrian civil war has claimed more than 100,000 lives and driven millions of people from their homes. Yes, descendants of first Christians are facing a grave crisis. Where is the Christian conscience? Where is human consciousness? Their plight is met with near-complete silence and inaction by Western Christians.
Reports from Damascus and other Syrian towns indicate that mass graves have been found in Christian villages. Sadly, priests and clergy have been abducted, tortured and murdered. One report says a dozen nuns from the battered Christian village of Ma’alula are still held captive, while their surviving co-believers remain hidden away from the fierce gaze of the “freedom fighters.”
Vatican has expressed its concern about a “worrying exodus” of Christians from Middle East countries which have been their homelands for nearly 2000 years. Vatican’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York, Archbishop Francis Chullikatt said Christians were often targeted by “fundamentalist and extremist forces” in the region, says Vatican Radio.
Radical Islam’s hatred of Jews and Christians has long been inscribed in blood across the Muslim world. Today it continues to be writ large in Syria.
Another report quoted Syriac Orthodox archbishop Selwanos Boutros Alnemeh as saying, "We have shouted to the world but no one has listened to us. Where is the Christian conscience? Where is human consciousness? Where are my brothers? I think of all those who are suffering today in mourning and discomfort: We ask everyone to pray for us."
The big questions is: Why there is not one word in the media about the destruction of the churches in Syria? There are millions of believing Christians in the world. Perhaps together we can awaken dozing Christian leadership. Please pound on political doors, protest publicly or through social media network.
